Born into a loving family with strong values, Jarryd’s early life seemed set on a positive trajectory.

Yet, beneath the surface, shadows lurked—shadows that would shape the man he was to become.

Jarryd reflects on his childhood poignantly: “My family was in no way dysfunctional…but looking back, they might have been too lenient. They tried to be my saviour and didn’t allow me to deal with the consequences of my actions.”

At age six and again at twelve, Jarryd endured sexual assault—secrets he kept locked away.

And, as he puts it, “Secrets keep us sick.”

These early violations were his “first drug of choice,” a twisted dopamine hit that awakened a confusing awareness of his own sexuality.

“I didn’t have many reasons to get addicted,” he admits, but the trauma planted seeds of struggle.

By fourteen, peer pressure nudged him toward alcohol. “Undealt trauma, plus alcohol, leads to drug addiction.”

He described the science behind it: trauma and alcohol both impair the brain’s frontal lobe, increasing impulsivity.

“One yes led to a lifetime of pain… And you can’t always shut the door once it’s been opened.”

The Turning Point: From Chaos to Clarity

Despite his athletic talent, Jarryd’s life began to unravel. Expelled from school at sixteen, his principal warned his parents, “He’s either going to get famous, or he’ll end up in jail.”

University offered no respite. In his pursuit of acceptance among the “popular crowd,” he paid a heavy price. “Three of my good friends from that time—one murdered, two living on the streets. Addiction is a scary thing.”

Yet, Jarryd credits “the grace of God” and the prayers of others for keeping him alive.

Homeless and invisible at twenty-three, Jarryd’s soul felt dead. “Every time I injected myself, I cried. I knew I was dying.”

Then came his prodigal moment—living with gang members and prostitutes, one of whom, a pastor’s daughter, told him, “Jarryd, you need to get your life in order because God has a purpose for you.”

The Road to Redemption and Purpose

After countless failed attempts at rehab, Jarryd’s final journey to recovery was different.

“My life started to fall into place,” he recalls.

Baptised in the Garden Route, he endured six months of torment—intrusive thoughts and haunting images—but clung to scripture:

“Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.”

– 1 John 4:4

Jarryd discovered that salvation wasn’t about perfection, but renewal. “I had to be transformed by the renewing of my mind,” he reflects.

This shift in mindset ignited a new vision: to help others avoid the pitfalls he knew too well.

Building a Legacy: From Selling Cameras to Changing Lives

Jarryd’s entrepreneurial spirit ignited in humble beginnings—selling cameras and Kerbys.

But he craved a deeper, lasting impact. When a friend introduced him to a struggling drug help centre, Jarryd seized the opportunity.

Together, they grew the organisation through school campaigns and community outreach.

Yet, working with recovered addicts came with challenges. His partner relapsed multiple times and stole money.

“If you work with recovered addicts, it could happen. You can’t be judgmental about it,” Jarryd says with a knowing tone.

Undeterred, he founded the 2nd Chance Trust, launching programs focused on schools, equine therapy (paused due to COVID), and a dance initiative called The World is Your Stage.

His sales background taught him the importance of integrity and belief in his mission.

“Collaboration might not give you money, but it will lead to money.”

The pandemic hit hard. “We were travelling the world, getting sponsors, doing talks. Everything we built came crashing down.”

Yet, Jarryd and his team chose to keep their staff and focus on sustainable growth. “We want to consistently grow,” he affirms, still praying for a fundraiser to reboot their momentum.

Jarryd’s journey is far from over. He hopes to publish a third and final book, reminding us all, “Time isn’t money—time is life.”

Today, Jarryd is a husband and father of two daughters, living a life that once seemed impossible.

His relationship with his parents, once strained to breaking, is healed. “They had to cut me off. I must have caused them lots of pain. But it’s all restored now.”

Reflecting on his path, Jarryd marvels, “I can’t comprehend God’s goodness towards me.”
